OFRENDA X DORIAN ULISES LÓPEZ MACÍAS

IN OUR LATEST ARTIST COLLABORATION: Dorian Ulises López Macías captures our veils inhabiting ordinary spaces in Mexico City. Removed from its familiar realm of weddings and ceremony, the veil is surrounded by the city’s contradictions and unexpected beauty. It encounters a raw physical reality and imposes a sacred order upon the chaos.
What happens to an object so charged with symbolism when it leaves the ritual that contains it? Does it carry its meaning with it, or was its meaning only the place it occupied? A true symbol does not point away from the thing. It lives within the thing itself, in its material existence and in the way we experience or use it. Its meaning is not elsewhere. It is there.
Mexico City is built upon symbols. Here, the sacred and the ordinary exist so close together that almost anything can become ritual. The city receives the veil without asking it to explain itself. It is not emptied of meaning, but neither does it remain unchanged. It feels foreign and yet strangely familiar. It carries one reality into another, abstract as an idea and immediate as a physical truth.

En nuestra más reciente colaboración artística, Dorian Ulises López Macías captura nuestros velos habitando espacios cotidianos de la Ciudad de México. Fuera del contexto familiar de las bodas y la ceremonia, el velo existe rodeado por las contradicciones y la belleza inesperada de la Ciudad. Se enfrenta al rigor de la realidad física e impone un orden sagrado sobre el caos.
¿Qué le sucede a un objeto tan cargado de simbolismo cuando abandona el ritual que lo contiene? ¿Lleva consigo su significado o acaso su significado no era más que el lugar que ocupaba? Un verdadero símbolo no remite a algo más allá del objeto. Vive en el objeto mismo, en su existencia material y en la manera en que lo experimentamos. Su significado no está en otro lugar. Está ahí.
La Ciudad de México está construida sobre símbolos. Aquí, lo sagrado y lo cotidiano coexisten tan íntimamente que casi cualquier cosa puede convertirse en ritual. La ciudad recibe al velo sin pedirle explicación. No se vacía de significado, pero tampoco permanece igual. Se siente ajeno y, sin embargo, extrañamente familiar. Entra en una realidad llevando otra consigo. Abstracto como una idea, inmediato como una verdad física.
